The Internmunicipal Relations Committee's (IRC) annual 2014 household hazardous waste collection held on July 12 at Peoples Natural Gas Field turned out to be a huge success. Residents not only from Blair county, but surrounding counties as well, lined up all day in their vehicles to dispose of and recycle their hazardous products and chemicals. The participation of nearly 450 households in this years event increased by over 50% from the 2013 household hazardous waste collection. Some common hazardous materials found in this years event were latex paints,oil-based paints, pesticides, automotive waste, pool chemicals, and household cleaners.
MXI Environmental Services LLC were involved in this years event to help unload vehicles and seperate the collected hazardous materials to be properly disposed. Local volunteers took time to survey, distribute handouts, and answer questions while vehicles waited in line. The total weight amounts of the collection from the event are still being processed, but we expect the numbers to double the amount of material collected during last years event.
Many people do not realize how dangerous it is to dipose these harmful products and chemicals in the trash. Improper disposal of hazardous waste material can cause serious health problems, contamination of watersheds, and have a significant impact on the environment. Although many hazardous waste materials can only be collected at our annual household hazardous waste event, however some materials can be accepted at the IRC Recycling & Compost Facility on Blacksnake Road all year long.
