Why Recycle?

Why Recycle?

Recycling and composting have many benefits, both environmentally and economically. Though recycling can generate ten times the number of jobs than disposal of that waste in a landfill, ill-informed critics still claim that it is a waste of time and resources. For an excellent summary of the benefits of recycling, take a look the article from the Pennsylvania Sierra Club written by IRC Director John Frederick. Here are some other great resources to help you dispel those myths.

The Next Big Step

As Blair County embarks on its ten year update on its Solid Waste Management Plan, we are aiming higher, hoping to improve our recycling program.  Check out our list of goals to build a more outstanding recycling, composting and waste reduction effort.

Trash and Recycling Collection Schedules

Written by I.R.C.. Posted in Residential

This area contains the trash and recycling schedule.  If you are looking for your yard waste collection day, please click here.  Recycling is required to be collected every other week, but some haulers do collect recycling weekly.  Your recycling schedule will depend to some degree on whom you have contracted for trash and recycling services.  The easiest way to determine your schedule is to download our My-Waste App on your smart phone or set your schedule on your desktop.  It only takes a few clicks of the mouse to have your trash and recycling schedule, leaf collection dates, and the dates of our special collections in one place.  If you need further assisitance, please contact the IRC at 814-942-7472 or email Katrina at This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. .  You can also check with your hauler for more information.  The zone map for the City of Altoona trash collection is located at the bottom of this page.

Curbside Recyclables

Written by I.R.C.. Posted in Residential

Curbside recyclable materials should be placed in your blue bin and set out for collection.  Paper should be kept dry and we recommend a lid for your paper recycling bin. Visit your municipal highway garage or office for a new bin or lid or call the recycling office for more information.  To explore bin and lid options, take a look at pictures of the various bins we offer. For more on composting drop-off opportunities, visit our composting pages here.  You can click on the image below to get a printable pdf version of What Gets Recycled.
