City of Altoona Yard Waste Collections

Curbside Collection

 The City of Altoona offers curbside collection of leaves for residents for two weeks in the spring (usually ending in early April) and throughout most of October and November every year. Residents will be able to bag their leaves and yard trimmings for collection.  Residents can always take these materials to the either the Buckhorn Recycling & Compost Facility or the Duncansville Recycling & Compost Facility.  

Reminders

 Paper bags only!

  • NO tape!  Please do not tape bags shut.
  • Simply fold the top of the bag.
  • NO trash! Be certain bags do not contain metal, plastic, or other trash.
  • Bags should weigh less than 50 lbs.  
  • Brush should be smaller than 3" in diameter and 6' in length.  Brush and small twigs should be bundled with string or twine

 Crews willl not collect whole trees, root balls, bags that are tied, or bags that weigh more than 50 lbs.

 

Spring Collection begins on March 27 and will end on April 5.

 Monday Zone: Center City from 9th Avenue including Fairview, Keith Area, Gospel Hill, 5th Ward, 9th Ward, and a portion of 12th Ward from 4th Street to 31st Street. The Juniata section, Whenwood, Ivyside, Logantown, and Fairview.

 Tuesday Zone: From 31st Street and Union Avenue including South Altoona, Mansion Park, Columbia Park, Llyswen, Highland Park, and Eldorado.

 Wednesday Zone: Center City from 9th Avenue and Union Avenue to the Valley including Tuckahoe Park, Dutch Hill, Prospect, Pleasant Valley and East End.

Fall Collections will begin on Monday, October 23 and end on Monday, November 30.  The Thursday zone will be collected on Monday, November 30 because of the Thanksgiving holiday. Materials should be placed at the curbside for collection by 7:00 a.m.

Yard Waste Drop-Offs

Residents can drop-off yard waste year round at three locations:

  • The City of Altoona Highway Yard (Accepts bagged material and car load quantities only!) - 5010 Sixth Avenue until 2:45 p.m. weekdays 
  • Buckhorn composting Facility - 1860 Black Snake Road, Dysart
  • Duncansville Composting Facility - 16906 Dunnings Highway, Duncansville 

Christmas Tree Recycing

Live undecorated trees can be dropped off from 7 am - 2:45 pm at the city highway yard located at 5010 Sixth Avenue on weekdays in January3. Trees can also be dropped off during regular business hours to either the Buckhorn Facility located on Black Snake Road or the Duncansville Facility located on Dunnings Highway.
