Residents not only from Blair county, but surrounding counties as well, lined up all day in their vehicles to dispose of and recycle their hazardous products and chemicals. The participation of nearly 450 households in this years event increased by over 50% from the 2013 household hazardous waste collection. Some common hazardous materials found in this years event were latex paints,oil-based paints, pesticides, automotive waste, pool chemicals, and household cleaners.

I would like to take the time to thank the many volunteers who have helped the IRC bring recycling to the residents of Blair County.  Volunteers have been integral to the success of our recycling program.  These volunteers have helped out in many different ways.  They have been greeters at a special collection, traffic directors, surveyors, back-breaking laborers, trash 'picker-upers', recycling advocates, data collectors, information givers, recycling sorters, bin placers, bin distiributors, organizers,  and all around general recycling advocates.  These are the folks who have broken their backs loading tires, electronics, Christmas wrap, and who knows what else.  They have gotten down and dirty with trash at illegal dumps, pulled tires from our streams, and worked to keep our drinking supply clean.   Our volunteers have been as young as 2 years old and as old as our passionate senoirs.  Our many events and clean-ups would not have happened without those of you who have committed your time to our mission.  It takes a special person to do what these folks do and we would be lost without them!

Now just to be sure that all of our volunteers know how vital they are to our operation, I want to put the call out there for our upcoming events.  We are in need of volunteers once again on June 22, 2013 for our Household Hazardous Waste collection at PNG Field, the home of the Altoona Curve.  Please clean out your garages, attics, basements, man caves, and under the kitchen sink now!  Gather up those chemicals, pesticides, herbicides, used oil, car fluids, oil based paints and bring them to the HHW event.  This is a once a year event!
